Description

AQUA Montserrat is a family adventure tour agency, providing ocean and conservation themed aquatic activities in Montserrat. Its core focus is mobilising communities for the Green-Blue Economy and Climate resilience. It designs, builds, monitors and evaluates ocean awareness experiences for schools, government, NGOs and communities.

The company is focused on educating communities of our wonderful yet fragile ocean backyards and the creatures that live within it. In doing so, it aims to empower and unite the next generation of ocean leaders. Its operation is evolving and is expected to see greater regional collaboration this year (2020). AQUA Montserrat's work is 100% community driven and independent, therefore we are constantly seeking collaborative and funding partners from across the world.

AQUA Montserrat's turtle conservation work and ocean awareness experiences came out because of the impact of climate change on communities in Montserrat. These include sea turtle nesting sites being flooded or washed away by storm surges and the negative impact of rising sea levels on the island's coastal ecosystems and the many species that inhabit them. (See video below)

AQUA Montserrat supports turtle conservation and the fight against climate change through education and outreach as well as by developing plans to decrease climate change vulnerability in Montserrat. Sea turtles have been directly impacted by these events as their nesting chambers are being flooded or washed away by storm surges. The company says it is imperative that people in Montserrat become proactive in mitigating loss to turtle numbers by recovering and incubating as many sea turtle eggs as possible.

This work is contributing to SDG 13 Climate Action and SDG 14 Life Below Water.
